Zydeco performer shot during Louisiana music festival

A third-generation zydeco performer was shot on Friday night during a music festival in Colfax, La.

Chris Ardoin, slated as one of the Friday headliners for the Zydeco Bike Fest at the Louisiana Mudfest venue, was struck in the back by a bullet that stopped near his ribs, his wife wrote on Facebook.

Zydeco is a music genre that has evolved in the southern Louisiana region, which is an amalgamation of Louisiana French accordion music and Afro-Caribbean beats, according to a Louisiana travel site.

“Yes, unfortunately tonight he did get shot in the back on his right side while on stage. Doctors said thankfully he’s a built guy. The bullet didn’t penetrate his lung and stopped near his ribs. We are currently in the hospital,” she wrote on his Facebook page.

Ardoin’s older brother, Sean, confirmed on Facebook that he had finished a set but was still on stage when the incident occurred. Sean thanked everyone who had reached out to him and said his brother was at home resting.

“God is faithful and praise Him that the bullet is ‘safely’ lodged in soft tissue in his back and is not a threat. Thank you your prayers and concern we’ll all believe that it will just be a reminder of how blessed he is and will never move from its resting place nor cause him discomfort in Jesus name,” Sean wrote on Saturday.

Grand Parrish Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post earlier on Saturday that they responded to the incident overnight, saying that two people – including a 14-year-old victim – had been shot and had sustained “moderate injuries.”

The sheriff’s office confirmed to The Hill that Ardoin was one of the victims shot.

The identities of the suspects involved are not immediately known at this time.
