Aaliyah’s estate blasts “unauthorized projects” as her uncle’s label teases release of her music

The estate of Aaliyah has issued a statement denouncing “unauthorized projects targeted to tarnish” after her uncle’s label appeared to teased the release of music by the late singer.

On Wednesday (August 4), a website titled aaliyahiscoming.com emerged, emblazoned with the hashtag #AaliyahIsComing and with a design emulating that of the cover art of Aaliyah’s 2001 self-titled album.

The site offers users the opportunity to subscribe for updates, then directs users to the social accounts for Blackground Records, the label owned by Aaliyah’s uncle and former manager Barry Hankerson – which, from the looks of empty but verified social media

Aaliyah Estate Releases Statement About “Unauthorized Projects” as Former Label Teases Music Release

Much of Aaliyah’s most popular music is notably unavailable to stream. Her albums One in a Million (1996) and Aaliyah (2001), plus singles like “Are You That Somebody?,” have stayed off digital streaming platforms. Only early singles and her debut album Age Ain’t Nothing But a Number (1994) are available. On Wednesday (August 4), fans on social media speculated about a streaming release after the account Blackground Records 2.0 shared a new website and hashtag: #AaliyahIsComing.

The original Blackground Records released the majority of Aaliyah’s music and was owned by the late singer’s uncle and former manager Barry Hankerson.

From a New York hub that aims to help people live more sustainably, to addressing the decline of water-based travel in Mumbai, the Savannah College of Art and Design presents 12 student projects in our latest school show.


The undergraduate and graduate projects also include an analysis of the tourist industry’s impact on the Galapagos Isabela Island’s mangrove forests and a project proposing the repurposing of Oregon Pacific Railway’s defunct trains for immersive storytelling shows.
