A new analysis of adults aged 80 years and older shows that a healthier lifestyle is associated with a lower risk of cognitive impairment, and that this link does not depend on whether a person carries a particular form of the gene APOE. Xurui Jin of Duke Kunshan University in Jiangsu, China, and colleagues present these findings in the open-access journal PLOS Medicine.

ExploreStudy reveals how cholesterol can contribute to Alzheimer’s risk

A past study indicated that people with low and intermediate genetic risk and favorable lifestyle characteristics were linked to decreased dementia risk compared to people with unfavorable characteristics. Such links were not discovered in people with high genetic risk, however. Yet the study indicated an association between lifestyle and cognitive impairment didn’t have a noticeable change based on APOE ε4 being present.
