Is it even a red carpet if Zendaya isn’t there? Maybe so, but few Hollywood stars deliver a stellar fashion moment like her. Whether she’s in archival fashion or fresh-off-the-runway looks, Zendaya and her stylist Law Roach consistently keep her fans on their toes. In honor of her 25th birthday today, Vogue is looking back on some of her greatest recent style hits.
Zendaya isn’t afraid to experiment. In July, for instance, she brought Moschino short-shorts to the Space Jam premiere, channelling her animated character Lola Bunny in the process with a high ponytail. At this year’s Oscars, she paid homage to Cher with a yellow, midriff-baring Valentino gown and mile-long hair. She can do playful style one minute, then turn around and pull off high glamour the next.
Just when she’s on a style streak of wearing the latest and greatest runway fashions, she’ll switch things up and bust out priceless vintage. At the Green Carpet Fashion Awards last year, she dressed to the theme in a slinky Versace gown from the label’s fall 1996 collection, designed by Gianni Versace. In June, she wore a color-blocked Versace dress from 2003 that was also famously worn by Beyoncé in her “Crazy In Love” music video. At April’s Essence Black Women in Film Awards, she also looked back even further, slipping into a puff-shouldered Yves Saint Laurent Haute Couture dress that’s from 1982.
The actor’s eccentric approach to fashion is exactly what makes watching the red carpet so fun. Her personal style never takes itself too seriously, and proves that good design is timeless—whether it was on the runway in the 1980s, or just last season. With Zendaya, the sky’s the limit when it comes to a memorable red carpet look, and we look forward to many more of them.
